Dutchman Bobbie Traksel triumphed in a dramatic Kuurne-Brussels-Kuurne semi-Classic in Belgium with Team Sky Briton Ian Stannard third behind Rick Flens.

Vacansoleil rider Traksel defeated compatriot Flens of Rabobank in the sprint at the end of a weather-lashed race.

The route, scheduled to be 194km, was cut by around 20km due to an upturned tree which blocked the road. The new route missed out the Cote de Trieu climb.

Matters became even more bizarre when Quick Step's Stijn Devolder crashed thanks to a large bin being blown into his path amid heavy rain.

When Flens and Stannard caught breakaway rider Traksel with 80km to go they looked to have a job of hanging on to their advantage; however Cervelo pair Jeremy Hunt and Thor Hushovd plus Hayden Roulston (HTC-Columbia) failed to make up the ground as the closest chasers.

Briton Hunt pulled out with 35km remaining and a last attempt was made by Cervelo's Dominique Rollin, but the gap had grown to three minutes and was safe.

In the final 10 kilometres Flens attacked before Stannard tried his luck, only to be caught then left behind.

He gamely fought back then held on, only for the Dutchmen to leave him trailing again when he opened up the final sprint.
