Holders Estudiantes survived the last 21 minutes with 10 men to record a 1-0 away win over San Luis of Mexico in the first leg of their Copa Libertadores first knockout round tie.
Striker Leandro Gonzalez scored the only goal in the 25th minute when he raced into the box and beat goalkeeper Carlos Trejo with a rising shot.
Estudiantes striker Gaston Fernandez missed the chance to put the Argentine side two up when his penalty shortly before half-time was stopped by Trejo.
The South American champions, who rested half a dozen first choice players including captain Juan Sebastian Veron, had Argentina defender Clemente Rodriguez sent off in the 69th minute for a second booking.
