Mackay calls on cup magic

Cardiff manager Malky Mackay claims his side's Carling Cup adventure will help to end their play-off hoodoo, after goals from Peter Whittingham and Don Cowie overhauled Wilfried Zaha's early strike to give the Bluebirds a 2-1 win.

Zaha's early strike gave Palace a deserved lead but Whittingham levelled early in the second-half with a free-kick, and the win was secured by Cowie's sublime volley to ensure Cardiff meet West Ham in the play-off semi-final.

Mackay's team lost on penalties to Liverpool in the Carling Cup final earlier this season and he said: "We are 10 games unbeaten going into the play-offs so there is real momentum there.

"I have been in the semi-final situation as a player with West Ham, Norwich and Watford. It is about staying calm and having a game plan.

"We need a timeline of how organised you are going into the semi-final and what you do in that time leading up to it.

"This group of players have already been through this sort of thing this season, with the Carling Cup semi-final and final, where there was preparation and planning needed. That will benefit us."
