Smith wants more from Saddlers

Dean Smith was a relieved man after Walsall's 1-1 draw with Huddersfield secured their League One status for another season but admitted he took little satisfaction from mere survival.

A second-half goal from Belgian midfielder Florent Cuvelier, on loan from Stoke and making his final appearance, wiped out a second-minute strike from Lee Novak.

Smith said: "It is success for us but not something to celebrate because we want to be better than fighting relegation.

"If we had played the whole game as we did in the second half we would have won it. But in the first half we were average.

"My aspirations are to finish as high as possible in the league, but we feel we are better than relegation fighters."
