A late goal from substitute Giandomenico Mesto gave Genoa a barely-deserved 1-0 win in the Serie A opener at Udinese.

Mesto netted an acrobatic effort with 10 minutes remaining, a rare piece of entertainment in a dreadful, negative match that Udinese controlled without really testing visiting keeper Eduardo.

An uneventful first half was evenly matched in terms of possession, with the hosts creating more chances due to a relatively adventurous approach.

Antonio Di Natale, who rejected a move to Juventus during the week, stung the palms of Eduardo on 13 minutes, while Andrea Ranocchia denied the same man with a superb slide tackle and Antonio Floro Flores put an Alexis Sanchez cross wide.

The best opportunity however fell to Genoa, with Giuseppe Sculli denied by a super stop from Samir Handanovic, who was initially going the other was before recovering to his near post.

Luca Toni suffered a nightmare Genoa debut, struggling to get into the game before going off injured just before half-time, with replacement Raffaele Palladino.faring little better.

The second half started in similar fashion and Udinese started applying sustained pressure on the Genoa goal.

Clear chances were scarce though, as Genoa barely left their half and Udinese constantly stuttered with the final ball.

As the match drifted towards the predictable bore draw, though, sub Mesto struck.

Having been introduced for Di Natale - ineffectual and perhaps distracted after rejecting a move to Juventus earlier in the week - Mesto injected some drive into Genoa’s game, winning a free-kick on the right.

Omar Milanetto swung the ball far post, Dario Dainelli headed it across goal and Mesto met it with a superb overhead kick beyond Handanovic and in.

Udinese rallied, piling on the pressure but rarely threatening: Floro Flores ran through but fired over under pressure from Ranocchia in their only real chance.
