Ville Larinto laid down a marker ahead of the Four Hills with the best leap in qualifying at Oberstdorf.
The 20-year-old Finn jumped 137.5m - which earned him 146.2 points, to lead the field.
Fellow Finn Matti Hautamaeki was second, leaping 136m and finishing on 143.6 points.
Veteran Polish jumper Adam Malysz, a winner of the Four Hills title 10 years ago, ended third after qualifying.
With qualification already secured, three of the biggest names in the competition, Olympic gold medallist Simon Ammann, defending Four Hills champion Andreas Kofler and the in-form Thomas Morgenstern, declined to jump.
The first event of the Four Hills competition begins tomorrow in Oberstdorf, before continuing to Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Innsbruck and Bischofshofen.
