Pietropolli takes Calabria opener
Daniele Pietropolli of Lampre-ISD took the opening stage of the Giro della Provincia di Reggio Calabria in southern Italy.
The 30-year-old claimed victory after holding off competition from six other escapees on a tough uphill climb to the finish at Catanzaro.
Pietropolli was part of a seven-strong group which broke free as the 164-kilometre stage, which started in Melito, reached its climax.
"What a pleasure to take this victory after a year of bad luck. I'm not thinking about the past. I will enjoy this wonderful moment and thank all my teammates who supported me fantastically," said the rider who hails from the Veneto after his fantastic finish to feltet.dk.
Fabio Taborre of Acqua e Sapone came in second with Androni Giocattoli's Jose Serpa in third.
The second stage of the three-day race sees the peloton make the 195.1km journey from Soverato to Vibo Valentia.
