Andy Thorn hopes Gael Bigirimana will remain at Coventry after the club reportedly received a bid from Newcastle for the young midfielder's services.

The promising 18-year-old is understood to have been the subject of an offer in the region of £500,000 to £1million from the Magpies, but Sky Blues boss Thorn wants Bigirimana to stay and continue his development at the Ricoh Arena.

While not confirming speculation of the bid, Thorn told the Coventry Telegraph: "Gael's a good talent but he's still got a heck of a lot to learn and I'd be really disappointed if he left."

Thorn added: "He's in there and very much part of my plans and I'd love to see him continue his development with us. I think it's really important at his age that he's playing competitive football. I'd love him to be part of it."

Academy graduate Bigirimana broke into City's first team at the start of last season and went on to make a total of 28 appearances, earning recognition for his development in March when he scooped the Championship's Apprentice of the Year award for 2012.

Bigirimana is contracted to Coventry until 2014 but the club's ailing financial situation, made tougher by relegation to League One, could force them to cash in.
