A right shoulder strain scuppered top seed Svetlana Kuznetsova's chances of going further in the tournament.
The Russian was up 5-3 in the first set but the injury curtailed her movement and from then on she failed to win another game in a 6-3 6-0 defeat by France's Marion Bartoli.
"It was so painful I almost had stars in my eyes," said Kuznetsova, who had a trainer check her shoulder three times during the match.
"I think I should have pulled out earlier. It's impossible... I cannot return. Then I cannot serve, but that was my choice to play."
Yanina Wickmayer was also a beneficiary as she will now face Bartoli in the quarter-finals following her emphatic 6-0 6-1 win over Timea Bacsinszky of Switzerland.
Third seed Venus Williams was forced to fight extremely hard for her place in the quarters as she came from a set down to beat Daniela Hantuchova 1-6 7-5 6-4.
The Slovak was outstanding for the first set, before Williams finally stamped her authority on proceedings at the end of the second.
Kim Clijsters was imperious as she brushed aside fourth seed Victoria Azarenka in straight sets, 6-4 6-0 to seal her spot in the next round.
The Belgian fell a break down in the opening set, but responded clinically to take it, before destroying her opponent in the second to clinch victory.
Clijsters will next face Australia's Samantha Stosur, who stunned seventh seed Jelena Jankovic 6-1 7-6(9) in just over an hour.
Agnieszka Radwanska was another comprehensive winner with a straight sets victory over Yaroslava Shvedova, 6-1 6-4.
The sixth seeded Pole will now face Williams in the quarter-finals.
The final match of the day saw second seed Caroline Wozniacki brush past Russia's Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 6-2 6-2, and will next face wildcard Justine Henin of Belgium who 11th seed Vera Zvonareva 6-1 6-4.
