Slater claims Billabong Pro Tahiti
Reigning 10-times world champion Kelly Slater claimed the Billabong Pro Tahiti event and with it the lead in the ASP World Tour title race.
The 39-year-old edged out Australia's Owen Wright - 18 years his junior - in clean four-to-six foot waves at Teahupo’o.
It is the third time Slater has won the event, but the first since 2005.
Slater bagged a combined score of 18.43 from a 9.50 and an 8.93, a total Wright could not match after registering a 9.27 and 7.83 for a combined 17.10.
“I felt like I finally hit my stride in the semi-finals this morning,” Slater said.
“In the final, I fell on a couple of waves that were maybe better than what I ended up getting scored on. It put the pressure on me, and took the pressure off him (Wright).
"He got that really big one at the end that could have gotten pretty close to the score. These are the best conditions this event has ever run in. It’s been a phenomenal week.”
The American, who started the event outside the top five on this year's tour, will be propelled back up the standings after this, his 47th elite tour victory.
Wright said: “I thought it was an incredible final. We both got really good waves and I felt like I did what I needed to on them. Kelly just happened to find ones that opened up a little better.
"Congrats to him, and hoping I can get him in the next one.”
