Vancansoleil rider Lieuwe Westra began the 14.7km time trial with an eight second advantage over Rosseler, while another 25 riders were also grouped within 10 seconds of the lead.

But Rosseler made the best of strong winds to overpower Westra and eventually secure victory by six seconds.

"This comes as a major surprise to me," Rosseler said. "I was riding at my limit this morning while Westra had been flying the first two days.

"I figured I didn't stand a chance and even switched off the TV after my ride. There was a lot of wind which favoured the strong riders."

Westra, who also finished second in Tuesday's first stage and finished safely in the peloton in the morning's 111km stage, was also a runner-up in the Driesdaagse last year.

"I'm fed up to the back teeth," the Dutchman said. "I believed in my chances and felt super.

"I didn’t leave one second out there on the course. Rosseler turned out to be stronger and so he deserved to win."
