Really, what on earth was this pensioner thinking?
Olympic star Laura Trott was among the competitors at the women's Tour of Britain which was made all the more memorable because of the actions of this man.
The pensioner, cruising along on a mobility scooter, was blissfully unaware of the carnage that could easily have ensued as he crossed the road.
Seemingly without any notice, the man randomly pulled out into the road midway through the Essex stage of the high-profile race without any awareness of what was going on around him.
It was an utterly surreal moment and could well have caused a disastrous pile-up.
The man caused a real shock for both riders and spectators as he whizzed past them on the corner of Jaywick Lane in Clacton.
Sam Wilkinson, who was filming the riders on his phone, spotted the man and caught the potentially very dangerous incident as he ambled across the road, missing the riders by inches.
Mr Wilkinson told the BBC: "I was really shocked. I thought he was going to get clipped and they were all going to pile up.
"If he’d been any later it would have been mayhem."
Fortunately he reached the other side of the road unscathed and without causing any damage to the riders, but it could so easily have been much worse.
