Vincenzo Nibali must have thought he was on top of the world after winning stage two of the Tour de France in Sheffield on Sunday.
But the Italian rider was brought back down to earth with a bump following an excruciatingly embarrassing incident on the podium after being awarded the yellow jersey.
It is pretty standard for successful riders to get a peck on the cheek from the podium girls who stand alongside them at their moment of glory, and things went according to script when the woman to his right congratulated him on his success with a smacker.
However, as you can see in the video above, the podium girl to his left proved rather less obliging.
Things looked to be going well when Nibali gave the girl a quick nod and went in for the kiss as she placed her arm around his neck, but at the last minute she pulled out.
To compound Nibali's misery, he was even forced to resort to the last refuge of anyone snubbed in a potential high-five or handshake: the 'oh I wasn't doing that anyway' scratch of the back of the head.
A red face with a yellow jersey? It's not a good look. But at least in this instance Nibali's own behaviour was beyond reproach, which is more than we can say for the last big podium scandal.
At least he didn't replicate Peter Sagan's behaviour from last April....
