  • Mickelson gets late invite to Scottish Open

Desperate times call for desperate measures — and for Phil Mickelson that meant having his management company make a call to the Scottish Open for an 11th-hour invite to Castle Stuart for a final tune-up before The Open Championship.

Usually Mickelson's on the receiving end of tournament invites, but following a missed cut at the Greenbrier Classic — his third straight poor start — he decided another start couldn't hurt.

There was just one problem: the tournament had closed entries on June 29th.

If the guy on the other line calling Scottish Open tournament director Peter Adams was managing a

  • Tiger and Daly team up for weight loss scheme

Tiger Woods and John Daly play the same sport, but orbit such different spheres that they may as well be complete aliens to one another. Outside of the occasional ceremonial photo (say, for The Open) you never see them in one another's company. Woods has nothing to say about Daly, and Daly's comments about Woods tend to veer to the off-the-course concerns.

So it's always a bit surprising to see these men in the same sentence, but here it is: Tiger Woods and John Daly have joined forces to help Greenbrier owner Jim Justice lose some weight. It's good timing, too, as the Greenbrier Classic has

  • Lightning strike

Three women golfers have been killed while out playing a round of golf in a thunderstorm in Germany.

The tragedy, which also left one woman critically injured, happened on Friday in the German city of Korbach, 100 miles north of Frankfurt.

A huge storm developed in the area after the four golfers had headed out for their game, and as the rain came down they decided to take refuge in a greenkeepers' shed on the course.

Tragically, however, the wooden shed suffered a direct hit by lightning that killed three of the women instantly and left the fourth fighting for her life.

    The women — all aged
