Rory McIlroy's struggling with his game at the moment, but there's still no questioning the fact that he's been one of the top golfers in the world over the last couple of years.

Blowing away the field at the 2011 US Open and ascending to the top spot in the world rankings has also turned the 23-year-old into a hero back in Northern Ireland.

To honour McIlroy's accomplishments, Northern Ireland's largest city, Belfast, is going to have a mural painted in McIlroy's honour. According to the BBC, the mural will be painted on a gable wall on Damascus Street in the Holyland area of Belfast.

"The idea for the mural began to take shape at the start of the year when McIlroy was awarded an honorary degree from the University of Ulster," the BBC report said.

"Local artist Danny Devenny was commissioned to paint the mural, which is located at the end of Damascus Street.

"Mr Boyle hopes that the new mural of one of Northern Ireland's best known sporting heroes will "brighten up the corner", as well as being an inspiration to residents."

Even though McIlroy's accomplished a lot in his young career, you'd have to imagine this is something he'll remember for a long time. No word yet on if he's going to show up when it's complete, but I wouldn't be shocked if he did.
