21:30 WI 85-1 (22 overs) STUMPS! — Smith cuts Swann to the boundary and that's pretty rapid progress from the hosts tonight underlining what a good pitch this is. England will have to work hard for wickets tomorrow - join me at 2pm to find out how they get on.

21:20 WI 78-1 (20 overs) — Sweetly timed four by Sarwan off Broad and he then he
carves Graeme Swann through the off-side. Just ten minutes left.

21:05 WI 67-1 (15 overs) — A real loosener from Broad, wide outside off and Sarwan plonks it in the gap square on the off-side for his second boundary. Another four next ball in the same area but this one is sliced over the top. In Broad's second over there is a swing and a miss after an attempted pull shot by Sarwan followed by a miscue from Smith that fortunately falls between the two cover fielders as he fails to read the slower cutter.

20:50 WI 51-1 (13 overs) — Another crackerjack cover drive by Smith who by reaching 27 and overtakes his Test average in the process. Time for Broad to come into the attack.

20:35 WI 41-1 (10 overs) — Ryan Sidebottom has been rather innocuous and it's Anderson who is asking all the questions. Sarwan is squared up and sees an outside edge fly wide of Kevin Pietersen at gully and to the boundary but he responds with a fine off-drive for three. Devon Smith meanwhile has flailed three boundaries through the off-side.

20:20 WI 22-1 (7 overs) — WICKET! Gayle departs in slightly controversial circumstances. A big appeal for lbw by Anderson is turned down by umpire Russell Tiffin but he is given out after a referral to TV umpire Daryl Harper — it was perilously close to being a no-ball, it was periously close to not pitching in line but according to the Aussie both were ok, just, and the ball was going on to knock over leg-stump.

20:05 WI 11-0 (4 overs) — Anderson has the ball on a string, beating Gayle's outside edge with some regularity with a subtle mix of out and in-swing. The home skipper does collect four with a thick outside edge down to third man.

19:50 — That was the first time England have made 600 in five and a half years. Jimmy Anderson is opening the bowling.

19:37 Eng 600-6 dec (153.2 overs) — A couple of lusty blows from Broad and Strauss calls them in with Ambrose unbeaten on 76. 24 overs for England to nip out a couple of top order batsmen tonight.

19:30 Eng 588-6 (152 overs) WICKET! — Bopara perishes for 104, chasing quick runs as he pulls Edwards straight down the throat of Taylor who this time makes the catch safely. A deserved second wicket for Fidel.

19:15 Eng 576-5 (150 overs) — Bopara is closing in on a maiden Test century and moves to 98 with an elegantly lofted drive wide of long-on off Taylor. He then pinches a single before Ambrose gives him the strike back. And there it is!! A paddled pull for a single and he reaches his century off only 140 balls with eight boundaries and a six in 232 minutes.

19:00 Jacques Kallis became the eighth batsman, and the first South African, to reach 10,000 Test runs today. He joined an illustrious list containing Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid and Sunil Gavaskar of India, Australia trio Allan Border, Steve Waugh and Ricky Ponting and Brian Lara of West Indies. Back in Barbados it's Sarwan to open up after tea.

18:40 — Eng 553-5 (146 overs) — Quality stuff now from Ambrose, a short arm jab over mid-on off Taylor is dismissive and he follows it up with a nice clip to the fence off his toes. He sweeps bowler #8 Ramnaresh Sarwan for a couple to bring up his third Test fifty off just 65 balls. Taylor is then pulled to the pickets once more by the stand-in keeper and England have scored nearly 150 in the session. TEA!

18:25 — Eng 528-5 (141 overs) - Ambrose cuts Hinds for four and then sweeps for another six. Bopara gives a Benn full toss what it deserves and that is the treatment through mid-wicket.

18:10 — Eng 499-5 (138 overs) — Bopara is playing for his century but Ambrose — already told he will be dropped for the next Test — is playing for now as he cracks Hinds and then Powell through the covers before sweeping Benn into the crowd for six. That's almost worth getting out of the paddling pool for. spoony10000 — the draw is odds-on because the bookies reckon the pitch is flatter than the M4.

17:55 — Eng 476-5 (134 overs) some_steam — I'm with you, England have no plan. All very stagnant, four runs in three overs ain't going to help to level this series. Ryan Hinds is on bowling left-arm darts, he's good for the over rate at least.

17:40 — Eng 472-5 (131 overs) WICKET! — Collingwood has given it away on 96. A wide delivery from Edwards and in attempting to plant him through the covers to bring up his ton in style he only manages to slice the ball to Nash, who running in from deep mid-wicket, takes the catch. That's the third time he has been dismissed on that figure in Test cricket. DROPPED! Tim Ambrose attempts to cut the third ball he receives from Benn but the top edge fails to stick in Denesh Ramdin's gloves.

17:25 — Eng 461-4 (128 overs) — England working in binary numbers now, milking the bowlers like one of my brothers in the dairy. It looks like a classic England plan is in place, get to 600 and then have 45 minutes at the hosts tonight.

17:10 — Eng 446-4 (123 overs) — Benn swaps ends to replace the ineffective, and by ineffective I mean useless, Powell. He immediately drops short however and is cut hard to the pickets by Collingwood. Bopara then brings up his maiden Test fifty off just 78 balls by tickling Benn off his pads. Colly begins to up the tempo by dispatching Nash twice over his head for boundaries and the West Indies look disinterested.

16:55 — Eng 420-4 (118 overs) — If Lionel Baker does not play in the fifth Test then my name isn't Monk D'Wally de Honk. Two long half volleys from Powell and Collingwood dispatches both to the cover fence to bring up the 100 partnership off 132 balls. Gayle turns to the military medium of Nash.

16:40 — Lunchtime news from the satchel swingers is that they have chalked up England's first innings total at 560-570. Big Benn to open up after the pies.

16:00 — Eng 405-4 (115 overs) — A sweet, sweet on-drive from Bopara off Powell and that's his fourth boundary before Collingwood brings up his 12th Test fifty off 104 balls. 104 runs in the session and jonathangrosskopf maybe we can have a chat about that declaration over LUNCH!

15:45 — Eng 387-4 (110 overs) The over rate is not too clever today, I've seen continents shift faster than some of these WIndies quicks. Daren Powell is into the attack and Sulieman Benn at the other end is cut to the fence by Bopara who brings up his highest Test score — 37.

15:30 — Eng 373-4 (106 overs)Some seriously quick stuff from Edwards this morning and a short delivery clatters into the chin of Bopara — rearranging a section of his helmet in the process. He needs a drink and the physio comes on to the field to make sure he can see straight. The blow fails to prevent this pair from bringing up the 50 partnership.

15:15 — Eng 365-4 (104 overs)Bopara is proving a compulsive hooker and he firstly plants Edwards just over the head of the sub fielder Shamarh Brooks on the mid-wicket boundary for six and then plays a slightly more uncontrolled pull for two. ima_fat_twyou certainly are. What makes a person want to comment on a forum they have no interest in? Maybe I should try it, now where's that Brazilian Mime Theatre message board.

15:00 — Eng 354-4 (102 overs)Gayle is using a sweeper on the
mid-wicket boundary but Brendan Nash has no chance on two occasions
when Taylor offers rank long hops which Bopara pulls away confidently
to the fence. Drinks and I'm off to join alagerdrinker for a Tennents Super.

14:45 — Eng 340-4 (99 overs)Ravi Bopara is a very, very nervous starter, his last three Test innings offering 0, 0 and 0. He is put down on 4 and it's that man Taylor again who spilled Pietersen last night. A false pull shot off Edwards and the big quick, running in from deep square leg, puts down a diving catch in almost a replica of last night's drop. Taylor then sees Colly pull away another short wide delivery with great alacrity. bobo.spambleyou obviously no nowt about cricket but from your avatar I can see a fondness for the savage ballet that is pro pigskin so I'll let you off just this once.

14:30 — Eng 329-4 (96 overs)Colly reaches 3000 Test runs by
slashing Edwards through backward point and he is the 37th Englishman
to reach that feat. Pietersen clips Fidel through mid-wicket for a
boundary and then departs. WICKET! He is playing all across a
straight one and his appeal to the TV umpire is a ridiculous one — it's
hitting middle halfway up and the most clear lbw you will ever see. Ray
Charles could have given that one and then Edwards bowls like Ray as he
conjures up five wides with a delivery way outside off before Colly
pulls Taylor to the fence. jonathangrosskopf asks: "If England get to 500 before tea time will Strauss declare?" Well let's get to 500 first.

14:15 — Eng 312-3 (93 overs)Paul Collingwood off with a flourish as he cuts a wide Edwards delivery to the fence. Colly and Pietersen bring up the 50 partnership and then KP gets a beauty of a yorker from Taylor — almost a repeat of his dismissal in Jamaica but the batsman manages to just squeeze down on the ball. Cowers has decided that today he will take no mercy on idiots who don't understand this great game — mogomagic you're first on the hit list.

14:00 - Eng 301-3 (90 overs)We have had a brief shower which has now stopped and
play will start on time. A few clouds hanging around and it's Fidel
Edwards to open the bowling and will probably offer a fair splattering
of chin music.

13:45 - England all-rounder Andrew Flintoff will fly home from the tour of West Indies tonight with a view to returning ahead of the one-day series. Flintoff, 31, is currently sidelined with a hip injury and has been ruled out of the final Test in Trinidad next week. He will continue his rehabilitation back in the UK and is scheduled to join up again with the squad here on the final day of the Test series fitness permitting.

13:30 - West Indies coach John Dyson: "The wicket is an exceptional batting wicket and I am sure our batsmen will be taking note of what a good surface it is in anticipation of batting on it themselves." Dyson's Australian compatriots are in action in the first Test in Johannesburg right now - South Africa v Australia LIVE with a century for a debutant.

13:15 - The West Indies were left to rue missed opportunities as captain Chris Gayle dropped Strauss, on 58, from a straightforward chance to slip and Jerome Taylor fluffed a catch in the deep offered by a Kevin Pietersen top-edge late on.

13:00 - Captain Andrew Strauss' 16th Test century has put England into a strong position in their quest to turn around the series against the West Indies. England will begin the second day on 301 for three after Strauss' fourth hundred in charge, a rollicking 142, made good of winning the toss at Kensington Oval.
