According to multiple reports, Louis van Gaal is ready to take an axe to the Manchester United squad and sell up to 10 players - all that and more as the media reacts to his first days in charge.

New boss to cull 10 United players: Louis van Gaal started work at Manchester United yesterday and a few of the papers agree on the fact that the steely Dutchman is ready to take an axe to the squad bequeathed to him by David Moyes.

United have already signed Luke Shaw and Ander Herrera this summer and, according to the Mirror, Van Gaal wants to sign at least four more players, meaning a big overhaul of the squad is required.

According to the Mirror: "The players poised to be shown the door by Van Gaal include Ashley Young, Wilfried Zaha, Marouane Fellaini, Bebe, Anderson, Tom Cleverley, Nani and Nick Powell.

"With Patrice Evra leaving for Juventus just weeks after being handed a new deal and striker Javier Hernandez open to a move elsewhere to play more regularly, Van Gaal could jettison as many as 10 of Moyes’ squad."

The Daily Express also throws a certain Japanese playmaker's name into the ring: "The players under threat are Nani, Marouane Fellaini, Ashley Young, Shinji Kagawa, Javier Hernandez, Tom Cleverley, Anderson, Wilfried Zaha plus Bebe and Nick Powell who spent last season out on loan.

It represents the biggest overhaul of players in United's modern history and reflects Van Gaal's determination to revamp a squad that finished seventh last season and failed to qualify for the Champions League."

The Daily Star introduces yet more names to the equation, and boldly states that some of the Van Gaal outcasts could be gone in the next two days.

"Louis van Gaal is set to wield the axe within 48 hours of taking over as Manchester United manager.

"Starsport understands those heading for the United exit include Anderson, Javier Hernandez, Wilfried Zaha, Nani, Tom Cleverley, Chris Smalling and Bebe. There are also huge doubts over the immediate futures of Darren Fletcher, Ashley Young and Rafael, while some of them might not even travel on the club's pre-season tour of the United States."

Eurosport's view: A squad overhaul is long overdue at United and Van Gaal could be the perfect man to do it.

Of all of the names listed above, perhaps the only ones worth salvaging are Shinji Kagawa and Rafael, both of whom would benefit from clever management.

It will be interesting to see how far Van Gaal goes when discussing the make-up of his squad in his first press conference this afternoon.

United swoop convinced Conte to quit: The Sun is reporting that Antonio Conte's dramatic departure from Juventus was sparked by the club's decision to sell Arturo Vidal to Manchester United for £35m.

No deal has yet been agreed of course, but the paper says Conte quit Juve in protest after discovering the star midfielder would be allowed to go to Old Trafford.

Eurosport's view: Juventus unveiled new coach Massimiliano Allegri yesterday and were very careful to state that Vidal will not be sold to United.

However, we have surely learned in football that you cannot trust anything that comes out of a club official's mouth in public and this angle from The Sun seems rather more likely.

Expect Vidal to be pitching up at Old Trafford any time now.
