Gary Neville wins over even more fans with City-Liverpool ‘wife’ retort

Manchester United stalwart Gary Neville’s transformation from polarising character on the pitch to universally-respected expert analyst after hanging up his boots has been well-documented here in the Eurosport bloggersphere.

At one point, he came across as the sort of footballer that only United fans could love, due to his unbridled passion for the club and for success – especially when it ran the risk of boiling over during games.

Now, the former right-back is a breath of fresh air in the television studios now rife with ex-players coasting through media assignments, with a degree of skill, insight and personality which puts his peers to shame.

Of course, he remains ardently loyal to the United cause, having dedicated his career to the Red Devils and helping them lift a host of silverware.

But just how much he has won over the non-MUFC general public was tested during the Monday Night Football coverage of West Ham v Sunderland, when Neville was grilled in the studio over the increasingly likelihood of the Premier League title race coming down to Liverpool and Manchester City:

“[Head to head] for the title? It's like having a choice of two blokes to nick your wife!” he joked.

While Gary Neville the player would have earned more scorn than anything for his pro-United distaste for any possible success for rivals Liverpool and City, pundit Gary’s razor-sharp quick went down rather well with the masses:
