Venezuelan star misses open goal from one yard out

Early Doors

We're kess than a month into 2014, but this horror miss in Venezuela last week already has to be a contender for one of the bloopers of the year.

During their Liga BBVA match in the city of Barinas, Zamora FC’s Layneker Zafra embarrassed himself with his mega-howler against Deportivo Petare.

Winger Pedro Ramirez whipped in a corner  which was flicked on at the near post, fooling Deportivo’s goalkeeper Giancarlo Schiavone into flapping at the catch and missing the ball completely.

Zafra ciykd hardly believe his luck as the ball came his way: he was left totally unmarked at the far post with the goal at his mercy.

Yet somehow – from a yard out, with a free header and nothing to block his view – Zafra flicked the header wide. And strangest of all, as he stretched for the ball he appeared to turn his head to the right, as if to deliberately angle his effort off target.

To be fair he is a defender, so perhaps his learned behaviour to get the ball clear overrode his instinct to score.

The good news for Zafra is that the miss had no impact on the result – his team still managed to win 2-1.
