Monaco striker Radamel Falcao

The news that Radamel Falcao is to join Manchester United on loan took the whole world of football by surprise on the final day of the transfer window.

Manchester City? Sure. Real Madrid? An obvious choice. Even Juventus of Arsenal would barely have raised an eyebrow.

But for the Colombian striker to join the tottering giant that is Manchester United seems incredible. Many cannot believe that a club with Robin van Persie, Wayne Rooney, Danny Welbeck and Javier Hernandez on the books could prioritise a further attacking option - despite the fact that Welbeck and Hernandez look set to leave:

Sheer disbelief was also common:

Several fans cracked open a nice tin of sarcasm - and all at 11 o'clock in the morning...

Others were more gracious with their assessment, pointing out that signing an established international is hardly a bad move:

But some intelligent optimists/deluded idiots* looked on the bright side and pointed out the clear upsides.

And many pointed out that the very fact that Falcao has agreed to go shows the pull that United have.

Of course, those commentators missed the obvious point: Radamel; is coming off a lacklustre season and a big injury, while Real Madrid and Manchester City both appear to have pulled out of the race due to UEFA FFP rules. Regardless, for United fans it's still heartening news - and time to celebrate!

Just a shame that despite having spent almost £150m in this transfer window, it still looks like they've barely started assembling the new squad:
