And so they came to Old Trafford, full of optimism about a new era of hope of expectation - Louis Van Gaal was in the dugout and everything was going to okay.

And then, after 28 minutes, Swansea City take the lead – you know what means?

Thank God the back of Paul Scholes' head was there to provide a sense of perspective to proceedings.

And half-time the United fans did finally get to see a winner – just not in the fashion stakes.

The second-half though brought another dose of new hope. Van Gaal swiftly got rid of his back three and there were clear indications that this was NOT, I repeat NOT, David Moyes' team.

When Wayne Rooney equalised it all looked as is everything was okay in the world, but NO, Swansea took the lead again with Gylfi Sigurdsson scoring what would prove to be the winner. And oh how the 'banter' flowed again.

But let us finish by giving credit to the pirates from Swansea City who deserve some credit for coming to Old Trafford and plundering all three points.

Football eh? The more things change the more they stay the same.
