It's official: Manchester United are a laughing stock. Their latest humiliation, at the hands of League One side MK Dons, prompted a predictable stream of mickey-taking on the internet, with even some of the United players' fellow pros seeing fit to put the boot in.

Edin Dzeko, of cross-town rivals and noisy neighbours Manchester City, was among those to jump on the anti-United gloatwagon...

... while former Arsenal midfielder Emmanuel Frimpong also got in on the act (one assumes Frimpong, a free agent after being released by Barnsley following their relegation to League One, knew the joke was on him).

Tim Cahill was equally unimpressed by what he saw.

Meanwhile, the rest of the internet was left to go crazy and revel in the demise of a once-great club.

David Moyes may be gone from the Old Trafford, but his memory lives on - in meme form.

Amid the hilarity, some serious points were made.

What on earth must Angel Di Maria, United's new record signing, have thought about it all? Well, a campaign to get #freedimaria trending was born soon after the final whistle in Milton Keynes.
