Footballers are always a little bit rusty at the start of the season. You can forgive them that, especially in the lower tiers across the continent, where the players won't have had the benefit of the World Cup keeping them on their toes.
Yet somehow this miss from Kaiserslautern winger Karim Matmour is still very, very hard to forgive.
Lining up in his first competitive match since May, the 29-year-old Algerian winger was playing for the Bundesliga 2 side against 1860 Munich, and doing his best to try and pull his side back into it after they'd had goalkeeper Tobias Sippel sent off early on, and conceded two first-half goals.
His chance appeared to have come as a perfectly-weighted cross found him unmarked in the box - but rather than bury the chance in the net, Matmour managed to boom it a good 10ft over the bar.
The look on his face after his epic miss says it all:
Somehow, that's the only thing that makes it better: rather than fail to take responsibility, he literally tore his own hair out in penance.
His look of amazement would be shared by everyone on the pitch later on in the game, however: after looking dead and buried with less than a quarter of the game left, Kaiserslauten mounted an improbable late rally to score three times in 12 memorable minutes and put themselves at the top of the table after the opening matchday.
Still, at he can console himself that it's still not quite the worst miss of the summer.
That unwanted title still rests with Fernando Torres, for this simply atrocious piece of nonsense in a pre-season friendly for Chelsea.
