Player presentations are a far bigger deal in Europe – and particularly Spain – than they appear to be in the UK.
One must only take a cursory glance at the unveiling of James Rodriguez at the Bernabeu or before him Neymar at the Nou Camp to see evidence of this; in England a fans are lucky to have a marquee signing paraded at half-time at a game in advance of their debut.
The presentation phenomena is not just the reserve of elite European clubs such as Real Madrid or Barcelona. So, when Alvaro Negredo signed for Valencia from Manchester City he probably had a fair idea that he would be paraded in front of the Mestalla.
However, it appears, he failed to prepare properly for the occasion – or more accurately prepare his excuses for his presentation should an awkward moment occur.
Basically, the presentation, in front of 14,000 fans, was going well until some fans asked the former Sevilla forward to kiss his new club’s badge.
Negredo, however, declined the invitation before offering up the pretty poor excuse that he would “have enough time to kiss it in the near future".
This rather bizarre episode ended with the new star being booed and jeered by the formerly adoring crowd.
What is it they say about first impressions?
Well, Negredo failed to make the best of first impressions and one can only hope that this does not sully his relationship with fans of his new club.
