We've all seen some extraordinary desperate defending moves in the past, not least just the other day when one poor chap got three teeth knocked out while trying to make a saving header.
But Tottenham's Belgian defender Jan Vertonghen took last-ditch desperation to a new low with his efforts to stop Aston Villa's Nicklas Helenius from equalising while the score was still 1-0 during Spurs' thumping Carling Cup win on Tuesday night.
Given that his shorts were by now round his knees, Helenius did well to make contact with the ball at all, and it's understandable that he wasn't able to find the target from a tight angle.
Perhaps the most amazing thing of all is that Vertonghen escaped any sort of sanction. As the magic of animated GIFs shows, that looks to have been a very poor decision indeed - and Spurs can count themselves lucky that they avoided a penalty, and possibly even a red card, which would have changed the match.
