Early on in the Premier League match at Hull Kompany was responsible for an uncharacteristic error, losing control of the ball deep in his own half.
Nikica Jelavic pounced on the mistake, and Kompany did what defenders instinctively do - he hauled the striker down.
It was a clear red card, and Kompany knew it.
Having made the kind of error one would associate with defensive partner Martin Demichelis, the Belgian showed his fury by initially remonstrating with the referee, and then assaulting the tunnel on his way back to the dressing room:
For the articulate, measured Kompany, the reaction was almost as unusual as the initial blunder. There were additional reports of a gesture made towards the fourth official, but they are unsubstantiated as of the time of writing.
But, with the title on the line and City's only good centre-back set to miss at least one match, you can understand his fury.
