Ahead of the Euro 2012 finals, we look at Portugal right-back Miguel Lopes, who made his international debut in the pre-tournament friendly against Turkey at the Estadio Da Luz in Lisbon, which ended 3-1 to the visitors.
Name: Hugo Miguel Almeida Costa Lopes
Date of birth: December 19, 1986 (age 25)
Place of birth: Lisbon, Portugal
Height: 1.82m (5ft 11 1/2in)
Current club: Porto
Former clubs: Benfica, Operario, Rio Ave, Betis (loan), Braga (loan)
Miguel Lopes has been the unlikely beneficiary from the falling-out between coach Paulo Bento and Jose Bosingwa.
Having been deemed surplus to requirements by Porto, the 25-year-old impressed so much on loan at Braga this season he earned a surprise Euro 2012 call as an uncapped player.
So unexpected was the news, that Lopes had to postpone his wedding, which was scheduled for the day of Portugal's friendly against Macedonia, May 26.
Lopes has pace to burn, and is very much a player in the classic Latin attacking full-back mould.
"I really like how Dani Alves and Maicon play, I feel that my game is a bit like theirs. They are my two role models and I have the motivation to get to their level one day," Lopes said recently.
That adventuous spirit was evident when he was picked to start the final pre-tournament friendly against Turkey as he marauded down the right flank with abandon.
Lopes dribbles well and delivers a good cross. He also won a second-half penalty when tripped by Turkey's Emre.
However, the flipside is his defensive frailty.
Portugal's back line was abysmal, with basic errors contributing to all three goals.
Lopes was arguably the least culpable of any player in the back four, but did not cover himself in glory for the first Turkish goal.
He was beaten too easily by Sercan Sararer, whose cross was turned in by Umut Bulut after some Portuguese dallying in the centre.
Lopes hopes to challenge Joao Pereira for a starting berth at Euro 2012. Despite an encouraging debut, Lopes remains an outsider for the right-back spot against Germany next Saturday.
