It is expected Vidic will be unavailable for a number of months, starting with Saturday's home game against Wolves.

Arsenal also suffered damage when losing to Olympiacos on Tuesday night.

Lucas suffered a knee ligament injury in Tuesday night's 2-0 Carling Cup victory over Chelsea, and it represents a huge blow for the Reds with the Brazilian one of the stand-out performers so far in this Premier League season.

Kenny Dalglish immediately triggered a recall clause in 19-year-old Jonjo Shelvey's loan deal with Blackpool in response to Lucas being sidelined.

Liverpool have ruled captain Steven Gerrard out of Sunday's big match with Manchester City and are refusing to put a date on his likely return.

Gerrard has not featured for the club since a draw with Norwich City on October 22 as he has been suffering from an ankle infection.

Concerns were heightened when he was pictured with a protective boot but Liverpool remain adamant the midfielder is progressing well in his recovery.

"Like we've already said, we are delighted with the progress he's making and we've said that we won't put a date on his return - and we won't put a date on it now," said
