Manchester United's Champions League humiliation in Switzerland on Wednesday night also proved costly on the fitness front.
Captain Nemanja Vidic was forced off with a nasty knee problem and although it is currently uncertain just how long he will be sidelined for, it is feared he has suffered ligament damage.
It is expected Vidic will be unavailable for a number of months, starting with Saturday's home game against Wolves.
Arsenal also suffered damage when losing to Olympiacos on Tuesday night.
The loss of goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski will not be sorely felt as he is deputy to Wojciech Szczesny in any case, but Andre Santos will miss the home game with Everton due to an ankle problem.
With Kieran Gibbs, Carl Jenkinson and Bacary Sagna also absent, Arsenal are bereft of full-backs and will have to play four centre-backs in defence against the Toffees.
Aston Villa have had a bad week on the injury front as well with Jermaine Jenas ruled out for six months and goalkeeper Shay Given now absent for four weeks.
