Fighting back on opening day of World Cup

Today was not the lightning fast start we had hoped for, shooting -6 in the betterball format and being five shots behind the leaders Australia.

But we did hang in there - and made four birdies in the last six holes to tuck us in the chasing pack.

The course played quite tough today with a 20mph wind blowing which made club selection difficult. I hope it stays that way for the week because I feel that Ian and I are good wind players and after four rounds I believe we'll work our way into position.

Coming into the week we knew that foursomes was probably our strength so we are looking forward to tomorrow. We had a discussion over lunch about who will tee up on the odds and who'll hit on the even holes.

There didn't seem to be a huge difference between them as the course is quite varied and more so because our games are relatively similar. In the end, we settled on me hitting the drive on the even holes.

Personally, I was very happy with how I played today and was glad to step in for Mr Poulter - who had a birdie-free day out there! He did contribute though: after four holes he noticed a little something with my putting and the slight tweak enabled me to roll in a few putts!

Teamwork comes in all sorts of ways this week. I know he is playing well in general and today will fire him up for the rest of the week.

I think all things considered, I like our position and our chances for the remainder of the week.
