Carlos Torres and Daniel Murphy combine for ridiculous 1-3-1 putout

Since the trade deadline, the New York Mets have looked like the team of destiny. The club acquired Yoenis Cespedes, turned into the 1920s Yankees at the plate and have opened up a 6.5 game lead in the division.

While the team's run has been entertaining, any time a club rips off such a hot streak there's sure to be some luck involved. That was the case Thursday night against the Philadelphia Phillies.

With the game tied in the bottom of the 10th inning, the Mets' magic kicked in ... literally. Jeff Francoeur shot an 0-1 pitch up the middle, which might have gone for a single had it been for Carlos Torres.

Torres deflected the ball with his foot, sending it near first baseman Daniel Murphy. Murphy managed to stay with the ball despite a strange last second hop, but made the stop with his back turned to first.

It didn't matter. Murphy turned and flung the ball toward the base. Torres, who was wisely heading over to cover the bag, snagged the ball in the air and stepped on first for the out.

The play was both excellent and ridiculous for a number of reasons. First off, seeing a ball deflect off a pitcher but still pick up an out is always entertaining. In this case, though, it was far from the best part of the play.

Murphy's throw takes the award there. It appears as though Murphy doesn't really know if anyone is going to be at first when he decides to make the throw. He just trusted that Torres would do his job and get to the bag in time. That's exactly what happened, and it led to one of the best defensive plays of the season.

The play couldn't have come at a better time, either. The Mets and Phillies were tied in extras, and this kept the Phillies off the board for another inning. New York would eventually pull out the win, mostly because Murphy doubled in two runs in the 13th.

The great defensive play, and the Mets' win, is just more proof that the baseball gods are now supporting the Mets. We're living in a world where the Mets' are not just good, but also have supernatural beings on their side. Our greatest fears have finally been realized!
