Rutgers wants 'to look' at having a game at Yankee Stadium

Rutgers wants to play another regular-season game at Yankee Stadium.

Athletic director Pat Hobbs told NJ.com that the Yankees want to "work more closely with us" regarding playing games at the stadium. The Scarlet Knights have played three games at Yankee Stadium including twice in the Pinstripe Bowl. From NJ.com:

"(The Yankees) want to work more closely with us," Hobbs said before throwing out the first pitch alongside Ash on Tuesday. "We want to look at maybe bringing a game here and announcing that sometime down the road. I guess the Yankees see Rutgers is starting to move forward and is a good story so they want to be part of it, too."

The school was scheduled to play Army at Yankee Stadium in 2015 but the game ended up being played at Army. The fact that it was a Rutgers away game may be important, because NJ.com notes that when Rutgers first broached the topic of playing Big Ten games at Yankee Stadium, fans who responded to the paper weren't too pleased with the idea.

The game could also serve as a way for the Big Ten to put a stamp on the New York City market. Rutgers' proximity to NYC was a big reason why the school was so attractive to the conference when it expanded and the Big Ten has offices in NYC.

We're just throwing this out there, but Ohio State could be a great (read: lucrative) opponent for a marquee game at Yankee Stadium. Rutgers is slated to host Ohio State in 2017 and new Rutgers coach Chris Ash is a former Ohio State assistant.

Northwestern's athletic director recently said he was anxious to have another game at Wrigley Field. The Wildcats played Illinois there in 2010.
