It appears Virginia Tech implemented fine system for players (Photos)

Virginia Tech defensive coordinator Bud Foster said Wednesday that the program was considering taking money from a player’s cost of attendance stipend as a form of discipline.

It appears the program already had quite an elaborate fine system in place.

On Thursday, the Richmond Times-Dispatch published two images of a television monitor outside the team’s players’ lounge that detailed the various fines. The fineable offenses ranged from missing class to having a dirty locker or dorm room. Take a look:

As you can see, the fines become larger for multiple offenses. A seventh offense for “improper equipment” would cost a player a whopping $1,600.

According to the Times-Dispatch, a third screen detailed various fines already levied to players.

A third screen listed players who apparently had already been assessed fines, with their name, offense, date it occurred and amount fined.

One player, for example, had been fined $20 for missing a meeting on Aug. 17, $10 for missing breakfast that day and $20 for missing treatment the following day, according to the monitor. Another player was listed as having $100 unsportsmanlike conduct fine and two $20 fines for missing special teams meetings.

In total, the screen showed five players being fined a total of $330.

After learning of Foster’s comments, Hokies athletic director Whit Babcock quickly intervened and put an end to it.

“I had no idea of any of it,” Babcock told the Times-Dispatch Wednesday night. “It has been discontinued 100 percent.”

Additionally, Babcock met with Foster, head coach Frank Beamer and associate athletic director John Ballein about the situation on Thursday morning. Babcock said none of the fine money “can be or was associated with cost of attendance.”

He also said a different fine system had been in place “for a number of years.”

From the Times-Dispatch:

“We talked about it,” Babcock told the Times. “There has been, in place for a number of years, not to this extent, but for a number of years, a little bit of a, and I hate to use the word, but I can’t use another one, but a fine system, disciplinary for our players and such. And I think it’s come out of bowl type stuff. So I was not aware that we were doing that. It’s not against NCAA rules. It’s probably more prevalent than people think, but I was not aware of it.”

It’s unclear when the fine system was implemented and whether or not the fines listed on the monitor were enforced.
