Auston Matthews, USA wunderkind, scores 1st goal in Swiss league

Auston Matthews, the Scottsdale-born phenom for whom teams will deny they’re tanking to draft this season, is playing for the ZSC Lions of the Swiss Hockey League this season.

He played his first game on Friday.

He scored his first goal on Friday, too.

That was some impressive speed for Matthews through the neutral zone before that nifty give-and-go with Chris Baltisberger on the wing, leading to a celebration on the ice and a celebration in the stands for people Matthews is going to make wealthy beyond their wildest dreams and also his family.

Matthews opted to play overseas rather in major junior or in college, making waves for not following the typical path of young star prospects in North America. Ryan Lambert had a good breakdown on why this trailblazing was a smart decision in preparing him for the NHL
