Connor McDavid scores first NHL goal, trails Gretzky by 893

It took him just over two games, but Connor McDavid finally tallied his first NHL goal for the Edmonton Oilers.

McDavid, the tank-inspiring phenom that went first overall in June’s NHL Draft, scored at 12:18 of the second period at the Dallas Stars. Defenseman Andrej Sekera took the shot; McDavid, sliding over to the middle from the left side, tipped the puck past goalie Kari Lehtonen.

McDavid had no points in his first two NHL games, although he had two shots in each game.

He started the season skating with Taylor Hall, but hasn’t skated with the Oilers’ star winger much since. One reason, according to Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet, is that both players want the puck:

They may not be in sync now, but that doesn’t mean it can’t happen. And, if I’m the Oilers, I’m committing to an extended partnership, because your two best offensive players must learn to work with each other.

Hall wasn’t on the ice when McDavid scored.

So there you go: Just 893 goals away from tying Wayne Gretzky’s all-time record. McDavid gets there, what, in eight or nine years?
