Daniel Alfredsson returning to Senators, joining front office: Report

There was a time when Daniel Alfredsson’s return to the Ottawa Senators looking like it might take several years, as wounds healed.

They low-balled him, he got bitter, they met his price, he said ‘nah, I’m going to the Detroit Red Wings because unlike SOME teams they actually have a shot at the Cup’ and you could almost smell the smoldering bridges.

But the reconciliation between the two happened rather quickly, as the former Sens captain signed a one-day contract to retire with Ottawa thanks to some work behind the scenes by GM Bryan Murray.

Now, it appears Alfredsson might be joining Murray in the Sens’ front office.

Via Ian Mendes of TSN:

A source tells TSN 1200 that Alfredsson is hammering out the final details to accept a role in the club's hockey operations department. An official announcement is expected at some point before the start of training camp next month.

… Murray has said that 2015-16 will be his final campaign as general manager, so Alfredsson's addition to the front office would provide additional depth for the staff. He has previously stated he would be open to working in a variety of roles in the front office, though it's not clear at this time what his official title will be with the hockey operations staff.

All’s well that ends well in this situation. It was super-awkward when Alfredsson left the franchise with which he was synonymous, and he was such a proud member of that community.

Wonder if becoming a GM is in the cards for him one day? We mean, of course, with another team. We wouldn't wish Eugene Melnyk's purse-strings on anyone.
