Jonas Gustavsson left Boston's Tuesday game due to 'elevated heart rate'

Boston Bruins goaltender Jonas Gustavsson left Tuesday’s game against the Anaheim Ducks for “precautionary reasons due to an elevated heart rate” the team announced Wednesday.

After leaving the game following the first period, he spent the night at Massachusetts General Hospital.

“All preliminary tests came back negative and he was discharged Wednesday afternoon,” the Bruins said in a statement. “Jonas is expected to rejoin the team after the NHL All-Star Break pending clearance from the Bruins medical staff.”

The 31-year-old Gustavsson’s had three heart procedures in is NHL career, the last one coming in 2011. The last surgery was to “help treat a condition causing an abnormal rhythm.”

Following the game, coach Claude Julien said he didn't know if Gustavsson’s problem was related to prior heart issues.

So far this season, Gustavsson’s proved a capable backup to starter Tuukka Rask. In 15 games, he has a 2.38 goal-against average and .915 save percentage. Against the Ducks on Tuesday, Gustavsson stopped 14 of 16 shots on goal.
