Josh Ho-Sang cut from Islanders camp after showing up late on Day 1

Seemingly everything involving New York Islanders prospect Josh Ho-Sang has some level of controversy, and the first day of NHL camp proved to be no different.

Arthur Staple of Newsday reports that Ho-Sang was late for the first day of Islanders training camp, and as a result was shipped back to Niagara of the OHL. His camp ended before it began.

So in the end, it’s extraordinarily tough love from an organization that sees the talent Ho-Sang possesses.

The puck world prizes punctuality as much as any other workplace, and this is why one does tend to hear teenage prospects refer to lead-up to the NHL draft as a 'job interview.'

There is more than a grain of truth to that agent-coached sound byte. Even if there was a legitimate extenuating circumstance for being late, Ho-Sang should at least have told the Islanders.

It's no doubt disappointing for the 19-year-old Ho-Sang, who on talent and creativity should rate a chance at making Team Canada this season but will have to show he can toe the line under coach Dave Lowry. Meantime, it apepars the IceDogs, expected to be one of the strongest teams in the OHL, will get one of their stars back in time for their season opener on Sept. 25.

Ho-Sang is a player under the microscope already because of his contentious history with Hockey Canada, which will surely be re-re-re-enflamed by this latest misstep. Arriving late to an NHL training camp isn't a great way to change your rep. The extent and reason behind his lateness isn't known yet.

Sending him home is a stone cold move by the Islanders, who surely could have found a less extreme punishment (vacuuming the locker room?, washing Capuano's boat?, airing out the Sparky costume?) that still would have taught the 19-year-old a lesson about being a professional.

Ho-Sang has been a polarizing player since his outspoken battle with Hockey Canada over not being invited to national team camp. His comments about hockey culture earned him plenty of support, while others questioned his attitude.

This unfortunate bit of timing for the Islanders is just more grist for that mill.
