Maine goalie gets involved in scrum, serves own penalty (Video)

Boston College swept their two-game series with Maine on Sunday thanks to a 2-0 shutout. Things got a little testy in the final minutes as a big scrum broke out behind the Black Bears’ net. A late jab trying to uncover a frozen puck caused emotions to get high, which soon saw Maine netminder Rob McGovern to get involved.

All in all, 13 penalties were handed out, including a roughing minor and 10-minute misconduct for McGovern. Rather than head to the dressing room to get an early show with 3:45 to go, the Black Bears goalie served the penalty himself.

According to SB Nation’s College Hockey blog, Eagles head coach Jerry York, who’s been behind a college hockey bench for 43 years, said he’d never seen such a thing before in his career.

McGovern's backup, Matt Morris, would finish the game.

As John Edwards pointed out, NCAA rule 28.2 states that if a goalie is handed a major penalty or misconduct, they must serve it themselves.

The win was also the sixth shutout in seven starts for Eagles’ goaltender and Vancouver Canucks prospect Thatcher Demko. According to BC, the feat matches the string the immortal Blaine Lacher put up during the 1993-94 season. Demko currently leads the nation with a 0.67 goals against average and ridiculous .974 save-percentage.
