Martin Brodeur likely to remain with Blues after Devils’ GM change

After Martin Brodeur and the New Jersey Devils parted ways last season, the path to a reunion was clear: He’d play out his final games with the St. Louis Blues, cut his teeth in their front office and then rejoin friend and former boss Lou Lamoriello in the Devils’ hockey operations department.

After all, it was Lamoriello who said Brodeur had a job waiting for him with the Devils whenever he wanted it: "He knows he'll be a Devil for the rest of his life. What Marty has done and the type of personality he is, and what his experience is, it's a no brainer. He's a Devil."

Marty may be a Devil, but Lamoriello is no longer the general manager. And with no relationship with new GM Ray Shero, it sounds like Brodeur, 43, will have the Blues for the next few years.

Although Lamoriello remains as team president in charge of hockey operations,  Brodeur sees the organization going in a bit of a different direction after hiring Ray Shero as GM last week and had already been talking with the St. Louis Blues about remaining as part of that team's front office.

In fact, that will likely become official by the end of next week, after Blues GM Doug Armstrong returns from the world championships in the Czech Republic and Brodeur returns from spending some time at his home in Florida.

“Especially with the change (the Devils) made, I think it's a great opportunity for me to take a step back and go somewhere – or stay somewhere – that I'll be able to learn and do things I want to do and try to learn as much as possible and who knows what the future,” the former Devils goaltender told northjersey,com today. “But, it's less and less likely it's going to happen in New Jersey for a few years, that's for sure.”

Shero said he’d have a conversation with Blues GM Doug Armstrong eventually about Brodeur. Is he still in the plans, or has the change in regime changed his future with New Jersey?

One assumes Shero isn’t going to traffic in nostalgia the way Lamoriello has during his run at the helm with the Devils, both on the ice and in management.
