NHL stars reveal dream 3-on-3 overtime squads; what’s yours? (Video)

TORONTO – The NHL has revamped its overtime format for the 2015-16 season, dumping the 4-on-4 session for five minutes of 3-on-3 firewagon crazy-pants hockey in which one missed shot can lead to several odd-man rushes on silently weeping goaltenders.

We’re might see some epic three-man squads this season around the League. Sidney Crosby, Phil Kessel and Kris Letang? Alex Ovechkin, Nicklas Backstom and John Carlson? The full Triplets Line playing as three forwards for the Tampa Bay Lightning?

Yes, please.

It’s shame this gimmick wasn’t around years earlier so we could see some of the NHL’s greatest players shine on open ice. To that end, we asked a group of current stars what their “3-on-3 Dream Squads”  would be, if they had a chance to pick any two players in hockey history to skate with them.

Check out the picks from Erik Karlsson of the Ottawa Senators, Ryan McDonaugh of the New York Rangers, Zdeno Chara of the Boston Bruins, Drew Doughty of the Los Angeles Kings, Anze Kopitar of the Los Angeles Kings, Ryan Suter of the Minnesota Wild, Brandon Saad of the Columbus Blue Jackets (a Pittsburgh native, FWIW), Tomas Tatar of the Detroit Red Wings and James van Riemsdyk of the Toronto Maple Leafs.

(Thanks to Yahoo Canada video maven Florent Conti for the assist.)

As you can see, we were as surprised as you are that only one dude picked Bobby Orr.

Now that you’ve seen the NHL players make their picks … what about you?
