NHL Three Stars: Flames victorious in OT; Ducks fall flat against Islanders; 'Lumbus wins!

No. 1 Star: Sean Monahan, Calgary Flames

Monahan's first goal of the game put the Flames up 2-0 on the Washington Capitals. After a Caps comeback, the forward played hero 1:40 into overtime scoring the game winning goal. Barry Trotz challenged the goal on the grounds the play was offsides, but it would be upheld by the on-ice officials.

No. 2 Star: Frans Nielsen, New York Islanders

Nielsen's two goals in the third period put the proverbial nail in the Anaheim Ducks coffin as the Isles won 4-1.

No. 3 Star: Brandon Saad, Columbus Blue Jackets

Saad's two points helped the Blue Jackets pick up their fifth win of the season. The Pittsburgh native scored his first goal against his hometown team on the power play.

Honorable Mention: Sergei Bobrovsky allowed 1 goal on 29 shots by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the Jackets 2-1 win. Scott Hartnell scored goal No. 8 against the Pens. He has more goals than anyone on the Anaheim Ducks. Marc-Andre Fleury has been solid for the Penguins, even if he's not getting all the wins. Check out this spectacular/lucky save on Cam Atkinson:

... Michael Latta and Jay Beagle scored the two goals needed to tie the game in the third period for the Caps. Karri Ramo made 34 saves in the overtime win ... Pavel Datsyuk made his season debut for the Detroit Red Wings in the team's 3-1 loss to the San Jose Sharks ... Cal Clutterbuck and Brock Nelson were the two other goal scorers for the Islanders. Anders Lee and Josh Bailey both earned 2 points. Thomas Greiss improved his record to 5-1-2 on the season in the 24 save win.

Did You Know? With this fancy power play goal, Corey Perry moves past Paul Kariya into second place all-time for goals scored as a member of the Ducks.

Dishonorable Mention: Brandon Dubinsky was a late scratch for Columbus due to injury. Patric Hornqvist thought he scored the game tying goal with 14-seconds left in the game but the officials signaled no goal. The Situation Room upheld the call on the ice due to a "distinct kicking motion" by Hornqvist.  Fedor Tyutin gives Sidney Crosby a cup-check and Sid does not appreciate the gesture:

... Jimmy Howard allowed 3 goals on 14 shots by the Sharks ... Anaheim played a good second period against the Islanders but that's about it. After winning four straight, the team is 0-1-2. The Ducks fourth line (for this game) made up of Max Friberg, Chris Wagner and Carl Hagelin did not play a single shift in the third period.
