The Nashville Predators beat the Montreal Canadiens 2-1 after a shootout Monday night, but the game could have ended in overtime had it not been for Craig Smith’s stick.

Smith and Ribeiro took advantage of a P.K, Subban turnover and entered the Canadiens zone on a 2-on-1. Smith passed to Ribeiro, who then fed Smith the puck as he was right on the doorstep. As he one-timed his shot, his follow through ended up blocking it, costing the Predators an overtime winner.

Smith has a history with open nets that isn’t pretty

"It was good to get a chance at it quick again and kind of erase it," Smith said afterward, via Adam Vingan of The Tennessean. "It's kind of funny now, but it wasn't funny at the time."

Fortunately for Smith he had a shot at redemption. With neither team having scored in the shootout, and Montreal missing their chance in the third round, the Predators had a shot to win the game, and Smith buried his opportunity.

The win helped the Predators set a franchise record with points in eight straight road games. It'll alsol help Smith get some sleep tonight.
