This summer Eurosport is counting down the world's greatest footballers, as voted by our international network of journalists. We will reveal one player per day, culminating in the election of the first Ballon d'Eurosport on July 19.

The Ballon d'Eurosport explained.

Now 34 years of age, Andrea Pirlo remains one of Europe’s most cultured midfielders. The Italian international makes up for his lack of pace with a highly accurate passing game and the ability to split open defences.

Pirlo’s partnership in central midfield with Arturo Vidal was a key factor in ensuring Juventus retained the Serie A title this season.

The 2012 Serie A Footballer of the Year, Pirlo did not quite reach the same heights in 2013.

However, his consistency and ability to retain possession has made the midfielder a mainstay of the Turin based club.

Pirlo's highest rating was seventh by UK/Ireland and his 'panenka' style penalty against England at Euro 2012 will live long in the memory of English football supporters.

How Eurosport voted

We asked the editorial teams of 10 countries/areas around the Eurosport network to compile their list of the world's 25 best players.

Then we did the sums, Eurovision-style. It's simple: a first-place vote is worth 25 points, second place is 24... all the way down to one point for a 25th-place vote.
