Having already asked to leave Manchester United on two separate occasions, if you believe Sir Alex Ferguson at least, it appears the England striker may finally have burnt his bridges with United fans after David Moyes indicated he would be playing second fiddle to Robin van Persie next season.
A future at Old Trafford looks rather unlikely, so where might Rooney end up if he leaves United - and how would he look playing for his new club?
Chelsea - 2/5
The Blues have reportedly had an offer of £10 million plus either David Luiz or Juan Mata turned down for Rooney - and their willingness to sacrifice one of their very best players tells you all you need to know about how highly Jose Mourinho rates the striker. The Special One recently said Rooney was "a player I like" and Chelsea are in need of a top-level forward with Fernando Torres being Fernando Torres and Demba Ba failing to make the required impact. Chelsea are now odds-on favourites to do the deal.
Paris Saint-Germain - 10/1
Rooney was linked with a move to the cash-rich Parisians earlier in the summer but their capture of Napoli's Edinson Cavani for a French record fee of £55.4 million on Tuesday rather diminishes the chances of Rooney also moving to the French capital. Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Ezequiel Lavezzi may both be moved on, so there could be space in the PSG squad in the next few weeks, but would Rooney countenance not being the number one?
Arsenal - 10/1
The Gunners are known to have an interest in a player who has tormented them on numerous occasions over his career, but of late Arsene Wenger appears to have been more focused on signing Luis Suarez from Liverpool, with a bid of £30m rejected and another of £35m reported to be on the horizon. Real Madrid's Gonzalo Higuain is also a target and in truth the chances of Rooney dropping down a level to go to a club that has not challenged for the title in years appears rather remote.
Manchester City - 20/1
It was City who courted Rooney in 2010 when the striker first handed in a transfer request at Manchester United, eventually climbing down from his stance that United did not match his ambition when signing a new contract. City's transfer strategy is now directed by Ferran Soriano and Txiki Begiristain though, and the club are close to securing deals for Sevilla striker Alvaro Negredo and Fiorentina forward Stevan Jovetic, meaning a move for Rooney looks well off the agenda.
Real Madrid - 25/1
Higuain is leaving Madrid and so far the club have focused their efforts on midfield with Isco and Asier Illarramendi secured huge deals. A striker is likely to arrive but it appears their top target is probably Luis Suarez, who has already said he would be interested in a move to the Bernabeu.
Bayern Munich - 50/1
Pep Guardiola indicated his summer transfer work was done when he secured the signing of Thiago Alcantara to add to the German record deal for Mario Goetze. Mario Gomez has departed the club to join Fiorentina but Mario Mandzukic had a superb season at Bayern last season and has a stellar supporting cast. Is there room for Rooney? Probably not.
Or... Manchester United - 9/4
Rooney is odds-on favourite to leave United but there remains an outside chance he could heal his rift with the club. It appears unlikely at present, but Moyes has said consistently he would like to bring Rooney back into the United fold.
