Despondent England fans are doing their best to take something from their dismal World Cup - by betting against their side and backing Costa Rica ahead of today's final Group D game.

In fact, for the first time ever, they've collectively bet less on their own team than on their opponents. Ouch.

That's according to bookmakers Coral.

"With their opponents already through to the knock-out stage and therefore expected to rest key players, England are perhaps surprisingly still favourites to beat Costa Rica," said a spokesperson.

"But unlike the first two games, where we took millions of pounds on them winning, there’s no sign punters are willing to take a chance for a third time, and as an England fan and a bookie I can understand their reluctance."
