The best player in the world is facing a battle to be fit for the World Cup.

But it's not his exhausting playing schedule that has led to Cristiano Ronaldo's problems - it's a spot of evil magic put into action by a witch doctor in Ghana.

That's what the witch doctor in question claims, anyway. Nana Kwaku Bonsam - known as "The Devil of Wednesday" vowed to ensure that Ronaldo was injured for the tournament in order to give the Black Stars more of a chance of escaping from a brutal World Cup group that also includes Germany and the USA.

"I know what Cristiano Ronaldo’s injury is about, I’m working on him. I am very serious about it," Bonsam told a local radio station, according to a report in The Guardian.

"Last week, I went around looking for four dogs and I got them to be used in manufacturing a special spirit called Kahwiri Kapam.

"I said it four months ago that I will work on Cristiano Ronaldo seriously and rule him out of the World Cup or at least prevent him from playing against Ghana and the best thing I can do is to keep him out through injury.

"This injury can never be cured by any medic, they can never see what is causing the injury because it is spiritual.

"Today, it is his knee, tomorrow it is his thigh, next day it is something else."

Evidence from Twitter actually backs up Bonsam's claim that he made his vow at the time:

Only time will tell if Ronaldo gets over what sound relatively minor fitness niggles before the tournament kicks off - but if he doesn't then we fully expect The Devil of Wednesday to be the pre-eminent mystical figure of the World Cup, filling the void left by infamous soothsayer Paul the Octopus, and Paraguay's lucky omen Larissa Riquelme.
