Lionel Messi and Neymar help Shakira dump on official World Cup song

The Rio Report

It's got to that time of year when fans have started hearing the official World Cup song everywhere.

And the verdict? It seems nobody is very impressed, with fans refusing to buy it - or even download it illegally - because they've found it "generic and cliched", and particularly in Brazil according to no less an authority than the LA Times.

And the problem is so bad, in fact, that the "official" song (whose video sits at the top of this page) is being roundly dumped on by Shakira's unofficial version.

The Colombian singer's "Waka Waka - this time for Africa" was the official song of the 2010 tournament, and was such a big success that she decided to release another pop composition for the 2014 event in Brazil.

And just to make sure that she really slam-dunks the record sales, she's enlisted some help from her other half's pals.

Now, if you or I were to ask for help from similarly-placed acquaintances, we'd end up making a pop video that included insurance assessors and accountants.

But Shakira does a little better: her other half is, of course, Barcelona legend Gerard Pique, who has roped in buddies such as Lionel Messi and Neymar.

On top of that, Shakira and Pique also used their toddler son, Milan, in the video - and the cute clip of him trying to dribble past an Indian elephant is truly priceless.
