After Jessica Ennis-Hill revealed she is pregnant and will miss the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow this year, we look back at other sports stars who have returned to excel after giving birth.

Kim Clijsters

Gave birth to her first child, Jada Elle, in 27 February 2008 – came back to win the US Open in 2009 and 2010. Popularly known as the “comeback queen”.

Paula Radcliffe

Gave birth to her daughter Isla in 2007, and then won the New York Marathon less than 10 months later.

Liz McColgan

McColgan won the 10,000 metres at the World Championships in Tokyo in 1991 less than a year after giving birth to her daughter, Eilish. She then went on to win the New York Marathon in the same year.

Tanni Grey-Thompson

Grey-Thompson, one of the most successful ever British disabled athletes in the UK, gave birth to Carys in 2002 and then only a matter of three months later went on to claim the London Marathon.

Matthew claimed her one and only Major in 2009 – the Open. The win, in August of that year, came a matter of months after the birth of her second daughter, Sophie, who was born in May of the same year.
