The teams are being finalised for the forthcoming Winter Olympics in Sochi and certain surprise inclusions are making a splash on Social Media.

Violin star Vanessa-Mae will put on her slalom skis next month to become only the third person to represent tropical Thailand.

Certainly Mae's inclusion was a source of a few light hearted jokes.

Bigger headlines were generated as London Olympics gold medallist Lauryn Williams and former hurdling world champion Lolo Jones were included in the United States bobsleigh team.

Jones, who was fourth in the 100m hurdles at London 2012, posted this message on her Facebook page.

Back to medal contenders and Sidney Crosby, who scored the golden goal that crowned Canada ice hockey champions in Vancouver, was named captain for Sochi.

Meanwhile the British team were collecting their kit.

Over in Russia, preparations continued but there was some concern about the facilities.

The final word goes to Dutchman Sjinkie Knegt who look less than pleased as Victor An celebrated Russia's relay victory at the European Short Track Championships.
